What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire portion of a tooth that protrudes above the gumline. Its job is to improve the appearance and function of a damaged tooth while also shielding it from further harm. A crown may be used if:

  • A tooth has a large cavity.
  • A tooth is cracked.
  • A tooth has recently undergone root canal therapy.
  • A tooth is misshapen.
  • A tooth is weak.
  • A tooth has serious aesthetic imperfections.

Crowns can be made of various materials. In our practice, we favor restorations made of porcelain, a type of ceramic that strongly resembles natural tooth enamel.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

To prepare your tooth for a crown, we will need to modify it so it will fit well beneath its restoration. Often, this involves the removal of a bit of enamel. Your mouth will be numb during this part of the process, so you should be comfortable as we work. Next, we will use a digital impression scanner to capture a three-dimensional representation of your teeth.

Thanks to our in-house CEREC technology, we can use that impression to fabricate your crown right in-house. The entire process can often be completed in a single appointment!  (This is in contrast to the traditional crown process, which usually takes at least two visits.)

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Getting a high-quality dental crown can provide you with several benefits:

  • We carefully shade-match our crowns so they blend in beautifully with the surrounding teeth. Porcelain reflects light similar to natural tooth enamel, so no one should be able to tell that you had some restorative work done on your smile.
  • With proper care, a crown may last for a decade or longer.
  • Improved oral function. A crown can enhance your ability to bite and chew without pain.
  • Avoid an extraction. By preserving a damaged tooth, a crown may spare you from having to pay for a dental implant or another form of tooth replacement.
